Doe Maar ('Just do it', 1978-1984) was a Dutch 'Nederpop'-band ('Netherpop'). This word refers to the sudden growth of Dutch language pop music in the Netherlands in the eighties (with bands like Het Goede Doel, Drukwerk, Frank Boeijen Group, Klein Orkest and Toontje Lager). Doe Maar was the first of these bands that scored hits.
The band Doe Maar had four regular members: Henny Vrienten (singer, bass guitar and songwriter), Ernst Jansz (singer, keyboards and songwriter), Jan Hendriks (guitar) and René van Collem (drums). The band was known for its music influenced by reggae and ska.

As soon as Henny Vrienten and Ernst Jansz started writing together, the band became an instant success, with top hits like '32 Years old'/'32 Jaar' (1980); 'Doris Day' (1981); 'Is this everything there is'/'Is dit alles' (1982); 'Belle Helene' (1982); and 'Dad'/'Pa' (1983). Also later albums were successful and the band is in commercialy respect till this day the most successful band in the history of Dutch pop music.
In 1984 the band stopped due to too big success (too many screaming girls and fainting fans during concerts). Female fans were divided between the tough, cool Vrienten and the sweet, affectionate Jansz. In 2000 they gave a reunion concert and released a new album. Also in 2008, 2012, 2013 and later years they gave series of reunion concerts. In 2000 Doe Maar was awarded with an Edison Oeuve Award.

The band members had successful solo careers afterwards. In 2007-2008 a musical with Doe Maar songs was put on the stage in the theaters, called Just do it!/Doe Maar!.
The song 'The bomb' (1982, written and sung by Ernst Jansz), was a big number one hit (13 weeks in the Top 40, 5 of them on number 1). It is still every year voted into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year), as high as place 224/2000.
The song is on the one hand about the Cold War and the request at that time of the American government to place American cruise missiles in the Netherlands. On the other hand the falling of the bomb is a metaphor for the inevitable approaching of the final exams in high school. But rather than working hard or preparing for exams, the person in the song would like to know a girl better.
